Planning a trip to Lapland is exciting. It's a destination many people dream about for years, a place of snow-covered forests, cosy cabins, reindeer, huskies and, if you're lucky, the magical Northern Lights.
Yet planning a Lapland holiday is often far more complex than people expect. When should you visit? Which destination is right for you? Should you stay in Finland, Sweden or Norway? Is a glass igloo really worth it? How many nights do you need? And how do you avoid spending a fortune on experiences that don't suit your travel style?
These are the questions we help travellers answer every day. At The Journey Designed, we've spent more than 16 years creating tailor-made journeys across the Arctic. During that time, we've learned that the best Lapland holidays aren't built around ticking attractions off a list. They're designed around the people taking them.
This guide brings together everything we believe first-time visitors should know before planning a trip to Lapland
Lapland isn't one destination. It's an entire Arctic region stretching across northern Finland, Sweden and Norway, with each area offering something completely different.
Some travellers dream of meeting Santa with young children. Others are searching for complete wilderness, luxury cabins, wildlife encounters or photography opportunities beneath the Northern Lights.
“Choosing the right destination is often the first and most important decision you'll make.”
This is where many itineraries go wrong. People often start by asking, "What activities should we do?" We believe the better question is:
“How do you want to feel?”
Do you imagine waking up surrounded by a quiet forest? Would you rather stay somewhere lively with restaurants within walking distance? Do you want adventure from sunrise until sunset, or a slower journey with time to unwind?
The answers to these questions shape every recommendation we make. Activities are important, but they're only part of the experience.
Not every part of Lapland offers the same experience.
Perfect for travellers looking for a balance of luxury accommodation, excellent restaurants, winter activities and beautiful forest landscapes.
Ideal for travellers seeking quieter surroundings, cross-country skiing and access to vast, open wilderness.
Known for remote lodges, exceptional food, unique architecture and unforgettable winter experiences.
Perfect for dramatic fjords, whale watching and coastal scenery combined with opportunities to see the Northern Lights.
Each destination has its own personality.
“There is no single "best" place. Only the best place for you.”

One of the biggest misconceptions about Lapland is that every winter month offers the same experience. It doesn't. The light, the snow and the atmosphere shift noticeably from one month to the next.
Brings the excitement of the first snow and fewer visitors.
Extremely busy, magical, festive and full of Christmas spirit.
Offers deep snow and peaceful landscapes after the holiday season.
Combines excellent snow conditions with increasing daylight.
Brings longer sunny days while still offering fantastic opportunities to see the Northern Lights.
Choosing the right month depends entirely on what you hope to experience.
One of the most common mistakes we see is trying to fit too much into too little time. Lapland isn't a destination you should rush. The Northern Lights don't appear on schedule, weather conditions change, and fresh snowfall can transform the landscape overnight.
We generally recommend staying at least four or five nights to allow time for activities, relaxation and multiple opportunities to experience the aurora if conditions are favorable.
It's easy to create an itinerary that's full. It's much harder to create one that feels balanced. Rather than trying to include every activity available, we encourage travellers to choose experiences they'll genuinely remember.
Perhaps that's snowshoeing through silent forests instead of another snowmobile tour. Maybe it's spending an afternoon in a traditional Finnish sauna. Or enjoying dinner in a wilderness hut beneath the stars.
“The best journeys leave room to simply experience the Arctic.”

After designing Arctic journeys for more than sixteen years, we've noticed the same mistakes appear time and time again.
Sometimes, doing less creates a much richer experience.
At The Journey Designed, we don't begin by sending brochures or suggested itineraries. We begin by listening. We want to understand who you are, how you like to travel, what excites you, and what kind of memories you hope to create. Only then do we begin designing a journey.
Some travellers want adventure from morning until evening. Others want peaceful days in beautiful surroundings with just a handful of carefully chosen experiences.
“There isn't one perfect Lapland holiday. There is only the one that's perfect for you.”
Over the years, we've learned something unexpected. People rarely remember every detail of an itinerary. They remember how they felt.
The silence of a snow-covered forest. The excitement of seeing the Northern Lights for the first time. The warmth of a sauna after a day in the Arctic. The laughter shared around a fire. The feeling of being completely present.
Those are the moments we design every journey around. Because that's what travel is really about.
If you're considering a trip to Lapland, start by thinking less about where you want to go, and more about how you want to experience it. Whether you're travelling as a couple, a family or a group of friends, taking the time to plan thoughtfully will transform your journey.
After more than sixteen years exploring the Arctic, we still believe Lapland has a remarkable way of surprising people. And that's exactly why we keep coming back.
